Thoughtfully designed, Apple’s attempt to mimic the use of a camera phone can occasionally come across as grating due to the camera shutter sound. especially while taking night photos or in quiet areas. Not to mention that the camera sound can get in the way of sneaking a photo of your sweetheart. But don’t panic, there are other ways to disable iPhone camera sound.
Disable Camera Shutter Sound on iPhone (2022)
Although there isn’t a specific switch to turn off the camera sound on an iPhone, all available solutions are simple and reliable. Although we concentrate on the iPhone, most of the techniques also apply to the iPad. Therefore, you may also use similar techniques to turn off the iPad’s shutter sound. A few ways will help you if you’re seeking for a way to disable the screenshot sound on your iPhone or iPad.
It’s important to note that the camera app is always set to play the shutter sound in various nations, including South Korea and Japan. Due to the current legislation, all phones with cameras have been changed to play shutter sounds. In an effort to stop voyeurism, it is done to prevent anyone from secretly taking pictures or recordings.
1. Use Live Photos to Disable Camera Shutter Sound
The camera app on your iOS/iPadOS device automatically mutes the shutter sound while the Live Photo feature is active. For those who are unfamiliar, Live Photo takes a moving image 1.5 seconds before and after you take a picture that lasts for 3 seconds. With a long push, it adds movement to your photographs rather than freezing the moment.
Live Photo, which was first available in iOS 9, works with iPhone 6s and subsequent models, iPad Pro 2016 and later, iPad 5, iPad Air 3, and iPad mini 5 and later.
- To disable the camera sound on your compatible device, open the camera app and then tap on the Live Photo icon (three circles). If the Live Photo icon has a line through it, that means it is active. If you don t see a line through it, Live Photo is disabled. Besides, you will see Live/Live Off briefly at the top center when you enable/disable Live Photo.
- Now, go ahead and capture images with complete peace of mind as the camera app won t make a click sound.
Is it possible to completely disable the shutter sound on an iOS device? What if you wish to do that? As it turns out, Apple provides a really cool option to maintain Live Photo.
- To get it done, navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone/iPad -> Scroll down and select Camera -> Preserve Settings and then make sure that the toggle next to Live Photo is turned on.
Remember that Live Photo simply mutes the device’s camera sound, not the sounds associated with taking screenshots.
2. Turn on Silent Mode to Disable Camera Sound and Screenshot Sound
The iPhone’s camera and screenshot noises are disabled when the hardware Ring/Silence switch is set to silent. Therefore, to silence the snapshot sound when working in a calm area, turn on the silent switch.
- The Ring/Silent switch is located on the left side of your iPhone. To put your iPhone in silent mode, flip the mute switch on the side of your device so that the orange is showing.
Note:
- Apple has removed the physical mute switch on the newer iPad models. Hence, you need to use the physical volume buttons or the bell icon (in the control center) or the volume slider to disable the camera sound on your iPadOS device (running iOS 12 or later).
- On older iPads (before the iPad Air generation), you can use the hardware switch on the right side to mute/unmute the snap sound.
3. Set System Volume to Zero to Disable the Snap Sound
Turning down the volume in Control Center in your iPhone is another simple method for muzzling the camera shutter sound.
- On iPhone/iPad without home button: Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to bring up the control center.
- On iPhone/iPad with home button: Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to access the control center.
- Now, use the volume slider to set the system volume to zero on your device.

For me, the Silent switch is the best way to turn off obnoxious system noises (such the shutter sound), although Live Photos and manually lowering system volume are both equally effective options for taking pictures without camera noise.
