One of Signal’s biggest characteristics is its compatibility with desktop operating systems like Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux. On my Chromebook, I’ve been using Signal, and thus far, everything has gone perfectly. The unique feature is that Signal on Chromebooks functions on its own. Signal simply works and maintains end-to-end encryption whether your smartphone is online or connected to a public WiFi network. So read our guide below if you want to instal Signal on a Chromebook.
Install Signal on a Chromebook (2021)
1. Prior to installing Signal on your Chromebook, you must must have Linux support. You are therefore unlikely to instal Signal on Chromebooks provided by the school at this time. However, you should check if Linux support is included with your Chromebook and how to set it up.
Note:On the Settings page, Linux (Beta) is displayed as Developers if you are using Chrome OS version 89 or higher.
2. After installing Linux on your Chromebook, launch the Terminal and type the command listed below to upgrade Linux to the most recent version. Don’t worry if you make a mistake in this process; just go on to the next one.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
3. Next, instal the signing key by running the command below.
wget -O- https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/keys.asc |\
sudo apt-key add -
4. After that, use this command to include the Signal repository in your Linux repository.
echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial main" |\
sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list
5. Execute the command below to instal Signal on your Chromebook.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install signal-desktop -y
6. Once the installation is complete, search for Linux programmes in the App Drawer. It ought to be on the very last page.
7. Once you open it, the Signal app will be there. Open the app now.
8. You will be prompted to use the QR code to link the Signal app on your smartphone at this point.
9. Open Signal on your smartphone and select the 3-dot menu. Open Settings, select Linked Devices, and then hit the Add button. To connect Signal on your Chromebook to your smartphone and sync all of your messages with the Linux software, simply scan the QR code on your Chromebook.
10. Signal appears like this on a Chromebook. Signal works independently on Chromebooks, as I explained above, so you don’t need to be on a shared WiFi network with the connected smartphone. Additionally, unlike WhatsApp, your paired smartphone doesn’t need to be connected to the internet.
